Abstract
This article analyzes the implementation of a university extension project focused on comprehensive solid waste management in the La Fuente neighborhood of Tocancipá, Colombia. The project, led by Industrial Engineering students from the Fundación Universitaria Agraria de Colombia (UNIAGRARIA), aims to enhance community development and environmental quality through awareness strategies and the application of participatory action research (PAR). The methodology employed includes community diagnosis, data analysis, and the development of awareness strategies using a multi-level systems analysis approach. Surveys, interviews, and participant observations were conducted to gather data on waste management knowledge and practices within the community. The results indicate a positive impact on the community’s environmental awareness, particularly among younger students. It was found that 70% of respondents initially lacked knowledge about solid waste, and 60% did not practice waste separation at home. However, 90% expressed interest in learning about proper solid waste management. The awareness strategies implemented, such as creating infographics and presenting them at educational fairs, effectively generated community impact. The project achieved an 89% improvement in organic waste management among the residents of the La Fuente neighborhood.
