Abstract
The effect of the proportion of isolated protein from Jatropha curcas L. and Glycine max L. on the mechanical and barrier properties of cast films, nanoreinforced with bentonite, was tested. The cast films were prepared with different proportions of Jatropha/soy isolated protein (2.5%/97.5% and 5%/95%, respectively). Additionally, different concentrations of bentonite (0.1% and 0.06%) and a constant quantity of glycerol (0.4 g/g of protein) were added. It was found that the concentration of the reinforcement and the protein significantly affect the mechanical properties of the polymeric films, the best formulation being that of 2.5% of Jatropha protein and 0.0625% of bentonite, with breaking stress values of 0.87±0.076 MPa, Young’s modulus of 48.4±3.3 MPa, and a percentage of elongation of 35.1±5.2%. The barrier properties were significantly improved with this same formulation, showing moisture content levels of 19.1±0.7%, a swelling percentage of 84.6±2.8%, and permeability values of 0.007±0.0001%. Characterization by infrared spectroscopy made it possible to identify the presence of functional groups and the interactions of the compounds present in the polymeric films. The addition of bentonite to the protein matrix significantly improves the mechanical and barrier properties of the filmsReferences
